Official standards and scope

RFC 9649 describes WebP, ITU-T T.81 describes JPEG coding, and the WHATWG HTML Standard defines canvas bitmap serialization. Despite its name, this page accepts any selected file passing the browser's image MIME or filename filter, decodes it in the browser, redraws it at its natural dimensions, fills a white canvas when exporting JPEG, and calls canvas.toBlob("image/jpeg") with a 40-100 quality slider defaulting to 86. Multiple files are supported. Metadata, animation, ICC profiles, EXIF orientation, original color sampling, exact encoder settings, and transparency are not preserved; transparent areas become white. The browser may reject formats it cannot decode, and the page does not verify a WebP signature or output bytes beyond receiving a Blob. Check type, dimensions, color, and artifacts before replacing originals.

Notes

  • Browser support for WebP, JPG can affect preview and export behavior.
  • Large or batch files use more browser memory, so process them in smaller groups when needed.
  • Preview the result before using it in production, publishing, or submission workflows.
