Official standards and scope

AOMedia specifies the AVIF container, W3C specifies PNG, and the HTML Standard defines canvas bitmap serialization. This page does not inspect an AVIF signature: it accepts any selected file the browser exposes as an image, decodes the first frame through an HTMLImageElement, draws the decoded pixels at their natural dimensions, and serializes each canvas as image/png. Browser AVIF support is therefore required even when the filename ends in .avif. AVIF sequences, auxiliary images, HDR and high-bit-depth precision, Exif/XMP, ICC and other container metadata are not deliberately preserved; orientation and color conversion follow the browser. PNG can retain the canvas alpha values, but that does not make the operation a lossless AVIF round trip. Check dimensions, transparency, color, and the actual output before archival or production use.

Notes

  • Browser support for AVIF, PNG can affect preview and export behavior.
  • Large or batch files use more browser memory, so process them in smaller groups when needed.
  • Preview the result before using it in production, publishing, or submission workflows.
