Formula and worked example

Formula: APY = [(1 + i ÷ n)^n − 1] × 100%.

Recalculation: A 5% nominal annual rate compounded monthly (n = 12) gives APY = 5.1162%, displayed as 5.12%.

Model assumptions

  • The nominal rate stays fixed for one year.
  • Compounding periods are equal and interest remains in the account.
  • Tiered, variable, promotional, fee-based, and day-count products are excluded.

Reading the result and model boundary

  • APY is higher than the nominal rate when a positive rate compounds more than once per year.
  • A bank's regulated disclosure may use actual days and product-specific rules.
